What Do You Expect?

Ever wonder if we really know what we see or do we see what we know?

The course of our life is largely determined by the lens of our thought life and expectations.  Anticipation, dread, excitement or worry are indicators of what we are expecting in the future.  These expectations are formed by a combination of history and core beliefs.  History often writes core beliefs that remain until we embrace a truth or reality that supersedes past experience (Romans 12:1 “be transformed by changing the way you think”).

Anxiety, worry and fear are signs that I expect abandonment or lack of help from the Father in an area.

This isn’t just true for negative perspectives but positive as well.  Peace in the storm comes from an internal belief that Father God has my back.

Philippians 4:6-7 CEV says,  “Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything. With thankful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God. Then, because you belong to Christ Jesus, God will bless you with peace that no one can completely understand. And this peace will control the way you think and feel.”    So .. .

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:8 NLT

Presenting our requests with thanksgiving (for hearing and answering) aligns us with the the truth that He has already gone before us to prepare things and will not leave us alone when that situation comes to pass. It is the expectation of His help and intervention. God is always with us but when my heart has embraced the lie “I am alone, he is not here to help me or doesn’t care enough to help me,” then He is there but we don’t have the benefit of his peace and we sometimes even block the help He offers because we are in agreement with and have invited the enemy to be the chief influencer in a situation.

So, the next time you find yourself worried, afraid or anxious, ask the Holy Spirit to show you what you are believing about your future that is causing those feelings.  Take it as an invitation to trust the Father’s heart toward you.  You may not get the outcome you wanted but you will have Him by your side and over time you will learn to expect His help and experience His peace along the way.

To be continued. .. …
