Broken = Opportunity

One of my all time favorite artists has been Rita Springer.  We probably first heard her work on an album in the late 90’s and used to listen to her a good bit although we haven’t heard as much from her recently.  The gift she has to write, play and sing has impacted me and Jenn as well as many others.

The other day Jenn saw a post from her on Instagram (Click here) about broken places and imperfections in our lives.  One of the things that makes Rita unique is her raspy power vocal that grabs your attention when she really hits it.  I didn’t realize that there was a story of brokeness behind it that turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

How many times do we look at the pieces of our lives with shame and discount ourselves because of an imperfection or weakness?  What if the very thing you thought disqualified you would eventually make you more effective?  It reminds me of the truth that God takes all the pieces – good, bad and ugly and crafts something beautiful in the end if we let Him. I love this verse.   “My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;  a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.”  Psalm 51:17

What if when you see broken, God sees opportunity?

How great is it that when we see broken, God sees an opportunity to do the unlikely.  We tend to want to throw away broken things because we don’t have the ability to repair, but He does.  Revelation 21:5 says He is making all things new.  Ever wonder why we love the underdog story?  I believe it is because we all know that deep inside we are broken and for anyone to succeed at anything means we overcame improbability for it to happen.  God loves taking the broken, the improbable, the written off and making it new.  It’s the story of my life.  Check out Rita’s short story below!

Actually, I fell on my nose. 😁That fall caused my nose to form more into somewhat of a bird beak shape. Couple that with opening up my mouth in preschool and this husky voice rolling out. So, I always felt ashamed that I had a crooked nose and talked like a boy! I struggled with imperfection until I realized, we all have them. Those are two of mine that at times felt overshadowed by a dozen more. I have answered more times that I can count, if I have nodules on my vocal cords and if I perhaps chain smoked! The answer is still no. Interesting enough, that buggy accident caused a nasal deviation and years ago, before I scheduled surgery to repair it, I asked the doc if it would affect my voice. He said most likely it would. Thus why Streisand never had a nose job! (Surgery was cancelled🤓) So, I live with imperfections and how they make me still at times, dislike my profile and the sound of my boyish voice. Yet, theres a good chance that the hill topple I took caused my air passage to change and my voice to become what it did. I’m convinced imperfections can be Gods secret way he gets to perfect his way in us. It’s okay to have flaws. Flaws make us real people walking out real life. I’m still torn up though about how that buggy crashed and broke at the bottom of that hill😕. #broken #flaws
